Just posted some photos from a few nights ago, taken at a nearby pond. I’m still scratching the mosquito bites, check them out!
Beyer’s Pond / 2010-06-13

Occasionally, when I’m having a nightmare, I become lucidly aware that I am dreaming. When this happens, I am powerless and unable to escape. My eyelids are too heavy to open. My legs, dead.

A gorgeous set of backgrounds from the Disney short Donald’s Vacation, via Rob Richards’s excellent Animation Backgrounds blog.
While you’re at it, check out his work on Pinocchio and Fantasia.
Think I might stop by my folks’ house this weekend and dig up my old Disney VHS tapes.

Sweet Woodruff

…prefers partial to full shade in moist, rich soils. In dry summers it needs frequent irrigation. Propagation is by crown division, separation of the rooted stems, or digging up of the barely submerged perimeter stolons. It is ideal as a groundcover or border accent in woody, acidic gardens where other shade plants fail to thrive. Deer avoid eating it.

This herb surrounds dad’s pond, back home.

Common Sorrel

…has been cultivated for centuries. The leaves may be puréed in soups and sauces or added to salads and shav; they have a flavour that is similar to kiwifruit or sour wild strawberries. The plant’s sharp taste is due to oxalic acid, which is a poison. In small quantities Sorrel is harmless; in large quantities it can be fatal.

The Old Man next door grew garden sorrel in his herb garden. As a kid, I quickly became hooked on the herb’s sour apple flavor.

Boy, would’ve been nice if the Old Man told me it was easy to overdose on this plant. Lots of blood. Use your imagination.

By starting adult life with an explicit “goal” that’s never been tested against any kind of experience or reality-in-context, we can paradoxically miss a thousand more useful, lucrative, or organic opportunities that just…what?…pop up. Often these are one-time chances to do amazing and even unique things—opportunities that many of us continue to reject out of hand because it’s “not what we do.

It is certainly not something where I am trying to identify as a geek, I am just trying to identify as myself. The worst thing possible is when you sort of create a fictional character for yourself that represents the user interface interface for other people.
