It is ideal as a groundcover or border accent in woody, acidic gardens where other shade plants fail to thrive. Deer avoid eating it.

Common Sorrel

…has been cultivated for centuries. The leaves may be puréed in soups and sauces or added to salads and shav; they have a flavour that is similar to kiwifruit or sour wild strawberries. The plant’s sharp taste is due to oxalic acid, which is a poison. In small quantities Sorrel is harmless; in large quantities it can be fatal.

The Old Man next door grew garden sorrel in his herb garden. As a kid, I quickly became hooked on the herb’s sour apple flavor.

Boy, would’ve been nice if the Old Man told me it was easy to overdose on this plant. Lots of blood. Use your imagination.
